Belmont Stakes 144 Where is the Belmont Stakes? Belmont Park When is the Belmont Stakes? June 9, 2012
The 144th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes will be held at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 9. ABC-TV and ESPN will provide live coverage of the day’s events.
The Belmont Stakes prize purse is $1 million. The third jewel of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, held five weeks after the Kentucky Derby at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.
The first Belmont in the United States was not the famous stakes race or even the man for whom it is named. Rather, the first Belmont was a race horse that arrived in California in 1853 from his breeding grounds of Franklin, Ohio. The Belmont Stakes, however, are named after August Belmont, a financier who made quite a name and fortune for himself in New York politics and society. Obviously, Mr. Belmont was also quite involved in horse racing, and his imprint is even intertwined within the history of the Kentucky Derby.

Preakness Stakes at Pimlico
The Preakness Stakes is a Grade 1 stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, run at a classic distance of 1 3/16 miles (9.75 furlongs; 1.91 km) on a dirt track. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg), while fillies carry 121 pounds (55 kg).
Fans love the turf races because they attract larger fields of horses, which makes the outcome for the bettors more interesting. Last year's Pimlico spring meet showed a 5 percent increase in total wagering over the year before, despite eight fewer live racing days. The average daily handle at the track was almost $7 million.

The following are some general guidelines followed by many pros which will give you a 'leg up' on many other bettors (first four tips out of 11 basics):
1) When betting straight, restrict your bets to win and show only.
2) As a general rule, bet horses you like with odds of 5-1 or greater to win and odds of 5-1 or less, to place.
3) Pay close attention to horses' recent performances. Form handicapping has a lot of merit, and you face your best chances with a horse in top condition.
