Kentucky Derby First Look & Top Contenders

The 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on May 6th with Always Dreaming and Irish War Cry the top two choices in the latest betting odds. The early Kentucky Derby odds have five horses listed with odds of 10-1 or less, with Always Dreaming and Irish War Cry at about 5-1, while Classic Empire is 7-1, McCraken 8-1 and Gunnevera at 10-1. Let’s take a look a first look at the 2017 Kentucky Derby with a focus on those five horses. >>> Kentucky Derby Odds

Kentucky Derby Longshot Picks

Classically speaking, the Kentucky Derby features some of the biggest paydays in the Sport of Kings. We haven't seen that so much in recent years with one of the favorites ultimately turning up with the bed of roses on his back at the end of the first Saturday of May in three straight years, including the great American Pharoah, who went on to win the Triple Crown. We're due for an underdog to come up big though, and we've got a few picked out who could break the bank and create massive payouts for exotic bettors over the weekend. >>> Read more about Kentucky Derby Longshot Picks

Preakness Stakes Longshot Picks

Alright, so Classic Empire isn't really a "longshot" by definition, but he's clearly the biggest threat to end the Triple Crown bid of Always Dreaming. He had a terrible run at the Kentucky Derby and still managed to get up to fourth, and that tells us that he has a lot more in the tank for the second leg of the Triple Crown. The two-year old champion has a lot in him for sure, and that was shown by his whopping 108 Beyer Speed Rating at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November at Santa Anita. If he can figure out how to get a better ride from Julien Leparoux at the Preakness Stakes, his stalking style should play well and give him an opportunity to run down Always Dreaming at the end. Don't be shocked if this ends up being a duel down the stretch between the two top horses. >>> Read more about Preakness Stakes Longshot Picks

Always Dreaming Preakness Stakes Picks

It's not all that surprising that Always Dreaming is the even money bet to win the Preakness Stakes. The Kentucky Derby winner is generally at least pretty close to odds-on in the second leg of the Triple Crown, and usually, those who really have a serious chance to capture all three legs end up being heavy, heavy favorites at Pimlico. It's still far too early to know who's going to go up against Always Dreaming at the Preakness Stakes, but the field that is waiting for him that didn't run in the Kentucky Derby could be a good one, headlined by Conquest Mo Money, the second place finisher in the Arkansas Derby and Malagacy, the Rebel Stakes winner and the favorite from the Arkansas Derby. >>> Read more about Always Dreaming Preakness Stakes Picks
